The Power of Attitude

Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens; not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life.  A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes.  It is a catalyst...a spark that creates extraordinary results.

That Which Lies Within Us

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."

                                                                                            Ralph Waldo Emerson

As we grow up, we learn...

As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will.

You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder
every time.

You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken.

You'll fight with your best friend.

You'll blame a new love for things an old one did.

You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose
someone you love.

So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never
been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back.

The Light of the world

Enjoy family and friends as well as the Light of the world.

Have a wonderful and prosperous New Year!

'Twas the Night Before Christmas and Merry Christmas to All!

T'was the night before Christmas and all through the town,

Not a sign of Baby Jesus was anywhere to be found.

The people were all busy with Christmas time chores

Like decorating, and baking, and shopping in stores.

No one sang "Away in a manger, no crib for a bed".

Instead, they sang of Santa dressed-up in bright red.

Mama watched Martha Stewart, Papa drank beer from a tap;

As hour upon hour the presents they'd wrap.

When what from the T.V. did they suddenly hear?

'Cept an ad.. which told of a big sale at Sears.

So away to the mall they all flew like a flash;

Buying things on credit and others with cash!

And, as they made their way home from their trip to the mall,

Did they think about Jesus? Oh, no... not at all.

Their lives were so busy with their Christmas time things,

No time to remember Christ Jesus, the King.

There were presents to wrap and cookies to bake.

How could they stop and remember who died for their sake?

To pray to the Savior...they had no time to stop.

Because they needed more time to "Shop til they dropped!"

On Wal-mart! On K-mart! On Target! On Penney's!

On Hallmark! On Zales! A quick lunch at Denny's!

From the big stores downtown to the stores at the mall;

They would dash away, dash away, and visit them all!

And up on the roof, there arose such a clatter,

As grandpa hung icicle lights up on his brand new step ladder.

He hung lights that would flash; he hung lights that would twirl,

Yet, he never once prayed to Jesus,  the Light of the World.

Christ's eyes how they twinkle! Christ's Spirit how merry!

Christ's love how enormous!  All our burdens He'll carry!

So instead of being busy, overworked, and uptight,

Let's put Christ back in Christmas and to all a good night.

Merry Christmas, my friends!

Happy Hanukah to my Jewish ones!  :-)

Good Men Must Act

A Coach Must Check for Understanding With His Players

At one point during a game, the coach said to one of his young players:

"Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?"

The little boy nodded in the affirmative.

"Do you understand that what matters is whether we play together as a team?"

The little boy eagerly nodded yes.

"So," the coach continued, "when a strike is called, or you're out at first, you don't argue or curse or attack the umpire.  Do you understand all that?"

Again, the little boy nodded.

"Good," said the coach.

"Now go over there and explain it to your mother and father."

A Message From Peanuts
The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the "Peanuts" comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the  questions. Just read this straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

Character

As I've Grown Older, This is What I've Learned

•I've learned that life is like a roll of toilet paper.  The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

•I've learned that we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we
ask for.

•I've learned that money doesn't buy class.

•I've learned that it's those small daily happenings that make life so  spectacular.

•I've learned that under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated.

•I've learned that to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

•I've learned that when you plan to get even with someone, you
are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

•I've learned that the best way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

•I've learned that life is tough enough, you don't need to complicate it.

•I've learned that opportunities are never lost; someone will take the take the ones you miss.

•I've learned that when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

•I've learned that one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

•I've learned that a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

•I've learned that I can't choose how I feel, but I can choose what I do about it.

•I've learned that everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

•I've learned that the less time I have to work, the more things I get done.

I've also learned that in life, you should not be so concerned about where you are going, you should be more concerned about how you get there.

Character

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet.

Only through experience of trial and suffering

and success achieved.

Jesse Owens' Recipe to Win

In the end, its extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more that that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don't win, how can you lose?

                                                                                                              -Jesse Owens

Last week's Bill Gates' Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it.
Everything is a matter of perspective and whenever you begin to feel like life is not fair or you feel completely overwhelmed, click on the photograph above and take a few minutes to remind yourself  of how absolutely unfair life can be.  Put your problems in the proper perspective and we all should look at the "other side of the coin."

BILL GATES - SPEECH TO MT. WHITNEY HIGH SCHOOL in Visalia, CA.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it.

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $40,000 a year right out of high school. You
won't be a vice- president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents
had a different word for burger flipping -- they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about
your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off, and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to
leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Kind Deeds

Twenty-one thoughts to live by.

 1.  Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

 2.  Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their               conversational skills will be as important as any other.

 3.  Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

 4.  When you say, "I love you," mean it.

 5.  When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.

 6.  Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

 7.  Believe in love at first sight.

 8.  Never laugh at anyone's dream. People who don't have dreams don't have much.

 9.  Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.

10.  In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

11.  Don't judge people by their relatives.

12.  Talk slowly but think quickly.

13.  When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"
14.  Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

15.  Say "God bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.

16.  When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

17.  Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others and Responsibility for all your actions.

18.  Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

19.  When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

20. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.

21.  Spend some time alone.

Winners

Winners take chances.

Like everyone else, they fear failing,

but they refuse to let fear control them.

Winners don't give up.

When life gets rough, they hang in until the going gets better.

Winners are flexible.

They realize there is more than one way and are willing to try others.

Winners know they are not perfect.

They respect their weaknesses while making the most of their strengths. Winners fall, but they don't stay down.

They stubbornly refuse to let a fall keep them from climbing....

Winners don't blame fate for their failures nor luck for their successes.  Winners accept responsibility for their lives.

Winners are positive thinkers who see good in all things.

From the ordinary, they make the extraordinary.

Winners believe in the path they have chosen even when it's hard,

even when others can't see where they are going.

Winners are patient. They know a goal is only as worthy as the effort that's required to achieve it.

They make this world a better place to be.                                                                                                                  -Nancye Sims

LOYALTY

If you work for a man, in heaven's name work for him;

speak well of him and stand by the institution he represents.

Remember, an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness.

If you must growl, condemn, and eternally find fault, why - resign your position and when you are on the outside, damn to your heart's content, but as long as you are a part of the institution, do not condemn it.  If you do, the first high wind that comes along will blow you away and probably you will never know why.

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.

Talent will not; there is nothing more common than unsuccessful men with talent.

Education alone will not; the world is filled with educated derelicts.

Intelligence will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.

Determination and persistence are omnipotent.

Your Life Is a Reflection of Your Thoughts and Deeds

Make me an instrument of thy peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

Where there is injury, pardon.

Where there is doubt, Faith.

Where there is despair, hope.

Where there is darkness, light.

Where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that I may not so much seek, to be consoled as to console.

To be understood, as to understand.

To be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving, that we receive.

It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned.

It is in dying to self, that we are born to eternal life.

Don't  Ever Be Afraid to Fail

You've failed many times, although you may not remember.

You fell down the first time you tried to walk.

You almost drowned the first time you tried to swim, didn't you?

Did you hit the ball the first time you swung a bat?

R.H. Macy failed seven times before his store in New York caught on.

English Novelist John Crasey got 753 rejection slips before he published 564 books.

Babe Ruth struck out 1,330 times but he also hit 714 home runs.

Don't ever worry about failure.

Worry about the chances you miss,

when you don't even try!

Always Make Tomorrow Better Than Days Gone By

COMPOSER DARIUS MILHAUD who has written over 400 works, was once asked, "If you had to go to a deser island, which of your compositions would you take with you?

"I'd take some blank paper, " he replied.  "My favorite composition is always the one I will write tomorrow."

We all reach the point in time where we feel we can go no further.  It may be a case of self-satisfaction with the skill we have devloped.  Or a case of "giving up"...surrendering to what is perceived as the best performnace we are capable of doing.

But what a mistake this may be!  Nobody knows for sure --not even the individual-- to what heights he or she can soar with a truly all-out effort.

There are good days and bad days.  Ideal conditons and poor conditions.  Many factors contribute to what can be attained.  So why settle for any spectific level of performance at all?  Keep your eye on the next plateau.  An then the net.  And so on.

This is the way mountain climbers achieve the peaks heretofore listed as "unclimbable."  And it is the way you can achieve goals you may have long ago decided were unattainable.

The journey to success in life is much like driving a car.

It is okay and even preferred to occasionally glance in the rearview mirror.  However, if you stare too long at what is behind you, it is likely that you will crash and burn.

Always live life by making today better than days gone by.
